Parental Alienation Syndrome
Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS) is a real disorder where one parent manipulates and essentially brainwashes their children into blaming or disliking the other parent during a divorce. Parental Alienation Syndrome is recognized by the courts in divorce cases and tends to take many different forms. Sometimes children will become uninterested in having a relationship with one parent and may act quiet or angry when they do visit with the other parent. In more extreme cases of Parental Alienation Syndrome, a child may openly display hostility towards the parent they blame, directly imitating the opinions of the parent who is manipulating them. If you have recognized these signs in the behavior of any of your children, you may want to recognize the possibility that the other parent is alienating your children from you.
If you have reason to believe that PAS is affecting your relationship with your children, you should contact my law office at our local number 1(516) 491-0565 immediately. As a Nassau divorce lawyer, I have the experience necessary to provide you with legal options to directly address your current situation. Parental alienation can negatively impact both the child and the affected parent and all children should have a fair opportunity at having a loving, nurturing relationship with both parents as they grow and develop.
Similar to Parental Alienation Syndrome, is "exclusion," which occurs when one parent attempts to exclude the other parent from a child's life. This could include such behaviors as excluding a parent from the activities of the child or not permitting the other parent to spend time with the child. Exclusion is a more subtle form of alienation that can significantly impact a parent-child relationship, and this should not be tolerated.
